Recess also has an effect on the safety of the young children’s lives. Many laws are in effect to guarantee the safety of children. Listed in “AAP Emphasizes Importance of Recess in Schools” is a list regulated by the “Consumer Product Safety Commission” to guarantee the safety of these children. The list contains rules covering supervisors, maintenance, and conflict resolution issues (par. 18). These laws were put in place to guarantee a better environment for elementary students to play. Although the safety of children during recess is a necessity, supervision of this could be hard for some schools to properly enforce. One problem that parents face are injuries of students. Ryan mentions this topic, saying that safety is a number one priority. She emphasizes that teacher supervision is required to resolve and assist in any fighting or injuries (par. 6). In an article "Mandating Recess Isn’t The Right Play" posted by the Tampa Bay Times, the author agrees that recess is beneficial when they said that requiring recess may lead school officials and other faculty to make tough scheduling choices. By requiring schools to have recess, they may give up time for other classes that are essential to the students proper education or cancel recess due to a lack of faculty willing to supervise the children (par. 4). Recess is beneficial safety wise for children who live in dangerous neighborhoods any may not have a safe opportunity to get exercise outdoors. Westervelt reiterates, "...Some of kids don't have a totally safe and secure place to play outside back in their neighborhoods. In addition, parents might not emphasize outdoor playtime after school” (par. 28). For the kids who do not have the opportunity at home, recess is the only source of safe outdoor exercise achievable. In essence, giving children a scheduled time for a planned recess also helps benefit the safety of children during school and at their home-life.
