Imagine the playground of an elementary school around noon. One can expect that there would be lots of children running around, playing games, and having fun. Instead, children are sitting at desks in classrooms and reading books indoors. In some schools, there is no longer a time for children to play on a playground. The number of elementary schools offering a time for students to go outside and enjoy themselves is slowly decreasing for a multitude of reasons. Although some schools would like to remove recess from the average school day, recess in elementary schools benefit children physically, helps them socially, strengthens them academically, encourages them mentally, and supports them through promoting new safety standards.
